[캐나다 SMR 동향] Canadian government called on to reaffirm nuclear support

2017년 6월 9일 캐나다 하원 내 “천연자원 상임위원회”는 정부에 상정한 보고서 (제목: The nuclear sector at a crossroads: Fostering innovation and energy security for Canada and the world)에서 SMR의 상용화를 포함한 원자력부문에 대한 정부의 장기적인 지원을 재확인해 줄 것을 요청하였습니다.

44쪽 분량의 동 보고서에서 아래와 같은 분야에 대해 7가지 권장사항을 담고 있습니다.

- Nuclear Regulatory & Safety Practices
- R&D and Innovation
- The Development & Commercialization of Next-generation Nuclear Technologies
- Leveraging Non-power Nuclear Applications for National Benefit
- Calling for the Establishment of a Nuclear Innovation Council to achieve this

특히 동 위원회에서 3가지 형태의 첨단 원자로 (SMR, Fusion Reactor, Integrated Molten Salt Reactor)에 대해 언급하고 있습니다. 특히 SMR의 개발에 대해 정부의 지속적인 지원을 권장하고 있는데, 그 이유는 SMR이 소외지역인 북부 지역사회에 깨끗하고 신뢰성 있는 전력을 공급하고 경제성 있는 자원개발에 새로운 지평을 열 수 있는 가능성을 인정했기 때문입니다.

Canadian government called on to reaffirm nuclear support

A cross-party committee has called on the Canadian government to reaffirm its long-standing support for the nuclear sector, including the commercialisation of small modular reactors (SMRs). The House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources made its recommendations in a report, The nuclear sector at a crossroads: Fostering innovation and energy security for Canada and the world, which it tabled before the government on 9 June.
