[영국 SMR 동향] SMRs could 'help secure' post-Brexit nuclear industry

2017년 5월 2일 영국 상원 “사업, 에너지 및 산업전략 특별위원회” (BEIS Select Committee)가 Brexit에 의한 원자력산업의 리스크에 대한 보고서를 발행한 것에 이어서 영국 기계공학회 (Institution of Mechanical Engineers, IMechE)에서 5월 5일 아래와 같은 제목의 보고서를 발행하였습니다.

- Leaving the EU, the Euratom Treaty Part 2: A Framework for the Future

상기 보고서는 지난 2월 발행한 보고서 (Leaving the UE: the Euratom Treaty)의 후속편입니다. 동 보고서에서 SMR은 영국에 핵심적인 수출 기회를 부여할 수 있으며 영국을 국제 원자로 공급시장으로 회귀할 수 있게 한다고 언급하였습니다.

1950년대 영국은 민간 원자력계획을 개발한 최초의 나라였지만 기 이후 중국, 프랑스, 캐나다와 같은 나라들에게 밀려났다고 하면서 SMR의 도입 및 상용화 추진으로 영국이 다시 한번 원자력 분야의 리더가 될 가능성이 있으며, 미래의 에너지 수요를 충족시킬 수 있을 뿐 아니라 기술력 및 고용을 향상시키고 미래의 수출사업으로 육성할 수 있다고 언급하였습니다.

아울러 영국정부는 웨일즈 주정부와 협력하여 북부의 Trawsfynydd에 위치한 기존의 원전 부지를 SMR의 건설 및 시험을 위한 부지로 활용할 수 있도록 지원해야 한다고 주장하였습니다.

The UK should focus on developing small modular reactors (SMRs) to secure its nuclear industry after the country's exit from the European Union, according to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). In its report Leaving the EU, the Euratom Treaty Part 2: A Framework for the Future, issued on 5 May, IMechE says SMRs could "present the UK with key export opportunities and return the country to the international nuclear reactor supply arena".
