[미국 SMR 동향] Xe-100 HTGR moves to conceptual design
2017년 3월 16일 미국 X-Energy사는 자사의 Xe-100 (High Temperature Gas-cooled Pebble Bed Modular Reactor)에 대한 개념설계를 착수한다고 발표하였습니다.
동 사의 개념설계 추진 준비 여부는 Southern Nuclear, Burns & McDonnell, Technology Insights 의 전문가들로 구성된 외부 패널에 의해서 평가를 받았습니다. 동 사는 10년 이내에 Xe-100을 건설할 계획입니다.
미국의 HTGR에 대한 연구는 1940년대 Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)에서 시작되었으며, X-Energy의 원자로설계는 DoE 연구에 기초를 하고 있습니다. Xe-100은 200MWt (75MWe) 규모로 “Four-pack” 플랜트를 표준형 (300MWe)으로 건설될 예정입니다. 동 플랜트의 기기 들은 모두 공장 제작되어 도로를 이용하여 운송된 후 현장에서 조립될 예정입니다.
2016년 1월 동 사는 Xe-100 개발을 지원하기 위해 DoE로부터 5년에 걸쳐 50백만불을 수여 (Cost-shared funding) 받고, BWX Technology, Oregon State University, Teledyne-Brown Engineering, SGL Group, INL, ORNL과 협업 중입니다.
이와 동시에 DoE는 Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR) 개발을 위해 유사한 자금지원을 Southern Company Services사에게 수여하기로 했는데, 여기에는 TerraPower, Electric Power Research Institute, Vanderbilt University, ORNL이 함께 참여합니다.
2016년 8월 X-Energy와 Southern Nuclear Operating Company는 각사의 원자로설계 개발과 상용화 협력을 위한 MOU를 체결한 바 있습니다.
